this book is absolute perfection and now one of my faves from this year - I did listen on audio because I enjoy when an author voices their work and i absolutely LOVED it but now going to have to buy a physical copy anyway just to annotate all of the unreal & beautiful quotes

3.75 stars - The Black Flamingo follows Michael from childhood through college. There is beautiful exploration of what it means to "be a man" and discovering who you want to be in a world that isn't always accepting. The audiobook had great narration as well.

This covered a lot of important topics. It read like middle grade but the content is geared toward YA readers.

Just finished re-reading this book, and I forgot just how much I loved it! Dean Atta is a brilliant writer and teaches the most valuable lessons about identity and staying true to who you are through Michael’s story. One of my top 5 favorite books for sure— I could read it over and over again. :)

Remember, you have the right to be proud; remember, you have the right to be you.

Michael is a gay, mixed race teen growing up in London. He doesn't feel he's black enough, greek enough, or queer enough. But when he finds the magic of Drag, he starts to learn who he is.

I fell in love with this book from the first few words. It was a lyrical story that fit the form of poetry. It was a deeply emotional, relatable, eye opening book. Everyone can find a piece of themselves in this story. The Black Flamingo is a must read!

This book has so much hype that I just had to read it. I was not let down at all, this book deserves all the hype and more.

There are so many serious topics discussed and handled in this novel. I wasn't expecting the heavy load that this book carries. It deals with racism, homophobia, coming out, DRAG, high school, friends, family, among some others. All of the issues were presented and handled appropriately. Some took time to handle but such is life.

This book was realistic and definitely something that needs to be talked about. The author made sure to include options for discussion. I was also very impressed that this book was written in verse and I still comprehended everything the author was saying. Poetry or verse in general is not something I normally can work with. I have a hard time understanding or getting into the stories. This story was the complete opposite.

I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Especially if you have questions about the LGBTQA+ community. Not all your questions will get answers, however, the topics in here are great to open up a coversation. This book needs to be promoted even more than it has so everyone knows it exists.
