I love the lyrical existential writing and how authentic all the characters were written. The vivid descriptions made you feel like you were truly along for the ride. I definitely think this book could’ve been 200 pages shorter; however, I would recommend it regardless. The ending is worth it.

I had no idea what this book was going to be about. For whatever reason I thought it would be a coming of age story about a young girl in the south. Though it was far from what I expected, I had a great time reading it. There were times where it dragged on. There would be so many details about something random but I was still unsure about why the attack happened at the museum. I liked that the characters were kind of self-destructive. Wish the author went into more detail about Pippa. She felt like the least developed character only there to serve as a love interest for Theo.

This was an absolutely incredible book. I didn’t want to finish it—I wanted to remain with Theo for longer. The writing was perfect and the New York City scenes were so melancholic and beautiful. It is a new favorite now. Donna Tartt, can you do no wrong?
slow-paced

this book could've been soooo much shorter

I am conservative in rating books, which is why I resisted the urge to give this five stars. I thought that the chapters in Las Vegas dragged, but later understood how important Boris' stature in the narrative needed to be. The final pages were beautiful and moving, but not entirely convincing as Theo's voice.Otherwise, it is ambitious, original, and compelling. I had enjoyed "The Secret History, and recognized Ms. Tartt's precocity, but felt it was a little overrated. This is a much more adult and complete work. She addresses and interweaves such encompassing themes as death, loss, class, terrorism, addiction, globalization, love, families, friendships, and ART. It's a book I want everybody I know to read so that we can discuss it. I was fortunate enough to view the Fabritius painting at the Frick in New York recently, and so I could feel its glow pervade all the sadness of the novel.

messed up things happened, theo makes bad decisions, and i very much enjoyed this. the last 15 pages or so made little sense to me but
