"Play if you dare."
The cover alone! π¨π€‘ just when you thought the artwork couldn't get more terrifying!
Spoilers beyond this point π
It's only been 3 months. I don't know what I expect Ollie's dad to do but just chilling out with everyone but a little sad over the summer wasn't it... I guess I expected him to grieve harder even with Coco and her mom in his life. And I k ow the real events were forgotten, but still....
And of course everyone is terrified and on edge! Even if the parents don't know the circumstances, their friend just died! They were there and saw it all! It's wild the way their language is written when they find Tim, they understand trauma, but when it comes to their own kids, they're being really strange any thoughts on why other parents? If you find out shoot us a text. Ugh!
"Coco has never lied to us. Have you, Coco?"
Coco shook her head, eyes still fixed on him in wordless hope.
"Well then," Mr. Adler said, as though that solved that. "And this is the first time she's trusted an adult with her story. Isn't that so?"
Coco couldn't speak. She nodded yes.
"I think you mom and I both want to be worthy of that trust, Coco."
"How do we expect her to decide to trust us if we don't trust her?"
I love Ollie's dad! This man is the heart and soul of what a good parent is. πͺππͺππͺ
Phil's self depreciation gets old fast... I'd like to say I find him endearing in the end. His self sacrifice is touching, but the woe is me was laid on a touch too thick. Maybe that makes him more human...
"I bet it's impossibleto get throughthe funhouse alone," put in Coco. "But we arenβt alone, are we?" πππ
The ending felt rushed and I don't understand why she made the smiling man so tangible if we weren't going to get more story and background about him. Honestly, I liked their interactions, but if this was how it was going to play out I wish he had just stayed the big bad...
The ending doesn't feel much different from the first book ending and leaves itself open to an even bigger bad than the smiling man, which I like, however it seems for now this is the final installment.

I really liked reading the Small Spaces series by Katherine Arden, but I do think that in the end the solutions to the problems were a bit too easy for me to fully enjoy everything.
It all started out strong with books 1 and 2, of which I liked the settings, the spookiness, the most, and I rewarded those stories with an easy 4 stars each. Then came book 3, which did not do much for me, hence the 3 stars, and then we got book 4, which should have been a spectacular ending to a great series with only book 3 as its weakness, but even though the setting was okay, the ending came way too abruptly and left me feeling a bit empty...
I would still recommend reading this work if you are a fan of middle grade horror, but after a while the enemy is made too weak to really be afraid of him, and defeating him becomes easy. Another 3 stars.
Happy Reading!

Great series ending. A little sad it ended because their story of friendship was really strong and I liked that they added people to their circle of friends.
