I love a good family drama (as long as it’s not my own), and I love stories that take place in L.A., so I was hoping I'd really love L.A. Weather by María Amparo Escandón.
This one follows an affluent Mexican-American family through drama and climate change in L.A. as they try to “weather” the storm of the their tumultuous lives. The plot involves love, loss, infidelity, divorce, deception, betrayal, grief, near drowning, rape, kleptomania, artificial insemination, and a gender-fluid teen.
I didn't love it, but I didn’t hate it — it was just meh. I really didn't connect with any of the characters and found it just not that interesting.

Felt very heavy handed which isn’t really for me. Also, coming from a Mexican-American, I feel like all the educating on Mexican, Chicano and LA culture lowkey took away from the story. Sure there was a lot of drama moving the plot forward but idk, I feel some emotional things were wrapped up a little too neatly. Again, just not for me.

was really into this for a while (even if I found some of the dialogue clunky) but I started getting really bored and annoyed with it in the last 4 or 5 chapters. Found the bit near the end about the story not being “neatly wrapped up at the end” really ironic. up until the last page, the final chapters had been exactly that - neatly wrapped up. everything was just working out perfectly when it hadn’t for so long. I liked most of the characters and the heart of the story (importance of familial connection/love), but it was hard for me to stay invested near the end.
honestly, I think the straw that broke the camel’s back was the third divorce. like really? all 3 of them get divorced? just felt a bit ridiculous to me and like the author was running out of new conflicts for her characters. the ending also kinda ticked me off. Made me feel like the book wasn’t about anything. Every time I tried to latch onto a message it would disappear after a few pages and I’d realize the book actually wasn’t saying much of anything about said topic (e.g. climate change and gentrification).
Considering lowering my rating but I was invested in this for long enough that I feel like I need to give a little bit of credit where credit is due. But not too much lol

Started this and really enjoyed it and then halfway through it seemed they were trying to throw in shocking items and they just lost their umph. no one was likable and I was dragging myself to finish.
