I tried really, really hard to read this. After 4 weeks I am giving up. I am more than halfway through but I have many many other books I would rather be reading right now. I really enjoy The Forgotten Garden and The Secret Keeper. I will struck with those books by this author.

It is definitely historical fiction, which I love, but it moves slowly and continues to dangle a carrot in front of the reader.  In my opinion- it was a bit long with places that definitely could have been shortened or omitted.

I liked it very much and I enjoyed it. The story and plot are great and although from the middle of the book you can more or less see where the shots are going to come from (pun intended) it has not disappointed me at all. I think everything is super well explained and put together. I haven't grown particularly fond of any character, except Grace. It makes me very tender and sad to imagine her at her tender age working as a maid and going through everything she had to go through. I wish the author had talked more about the ages of the characters because I was completely blind and didn't know how to imagine them, but hey, it doesn't have much importance in the story itself. I would also have liked to see more "reactions" to certain events that occurred and have not been seen at all. Without giving spoilers... Did Hannah find out at the end of her father's big secret??? God... I hate that they haven't resolved that huge question, for me one of the most important things in the book. Did the others know? Why didn't they say anything? WHY DIDN'T GRACE SPEAK? GOOOOOOOOD. In my opinion, the book has a lot of intrigue and the way it tells everything is a great success.

I really enjoyed this book. It is told in flashbacks by a 99 year old woman looking back on the significant events in her life that centered around her years of service at Riverton. Despite figuring out one of the "secrets" fairly early in the book, there were plenty of others to hold my interest throughout. I also enjoyed the very clever structure of the novel. I am looking forward to reading more of Kate Morton's books.
