Disgusting, dense, and pretentious. Was a struggle to even get to 150 pages.

I just wasn't finding myself bothered about reading this. I tried to give it a good chance as I've heard if you get so far in its worth it, but I just don't think this is for me.

Trigger warnings for most things that could be triggering so proceed with care. A dark tale of a man who was hired to find a missing boy ten years ago and tells his story to an inquisitor after that same boy has died.

Magic, myth, mystery and graphic psychological horror abound wrapped in a queer romantic adventure about love, family, found family, masculinity, and pride.

There's also misogyny but it's explored as a character flaw of the character that most displays it.

One of the best books I've read.

This was a difficult book to read- I was very close to DNF-ing around 100 pages in.

The narative style is layered and often difficult to understand- the beginning stories don't connect to the main plot until the ending third of the book. Descriptions of places and fight scenes are overly detailed and quickly become muddy, making it hard to follow exactly what's happening.

What made this book the most difficult to read is the constant degradation of female characters and grossly unnecessary descriptions of SA and death. Both of these are constant throughout the book, and do not really serve a larger function in the narrative.

I do want to give credit for the things I enjoyed about this book- mainly the mythological creatures and the snappy dialogue exchanges between characters.

So if I had to say I would say this is character driven, but really this book isn’t going anywhere it’s sort of just circling the drain. Which isn’t necessarily bad. But it’s not a very focused book. It’s not at all clear when the book is taking place until the last couple pages. And the rest of the book is like talking to that friend you have that just can’t stay on topic and have 30 page tangents about completely unrelated things. There are at least 2 basically unnecessary side plots that are given more pages than the actual plot. This reminds me more of Joyce and Kundera than game of thrones.

I think this is the book you would get if you asked China Mielville to write a misogynist sci fi novel. Although I don’t think he would be willing to write this book.

I will say in the authors defense I think he painted himself into a corner by choosing a really shitty misogynist as his narrator and he was honest to that choice. I don’t think it means anything about the author. I do think it’s interesting the second book is from a female and I want to see what that looks like.
