GORGEOUS writing, I felt like I was in the middle of a fantastical mythological Mayan FAIRY TALE.

The descriptions of Xibalba were awe-inspiring and terrifying and beautiful and UGH. Gods of Jade and Shadow has all the elements of a classic Cinderella story but make it a little subversive, a little more feminist. The romance plot was so perfect,

so tragically accurate, and the scene with the red flowers made me want to burst out of my skin it was so fucking sad

Honestly, this is really 2 stars from me -- I just could NOT get into it. But, my whole book club loved it, and someone made the comment that it would make a great movie, and.......YES, actually, the visuals would be amazing, and the story would be so fun. I think something about the writing style just didn't do it for me (shrug).
