There is SO VERY MUCH going on in this book, and the balance of rebellious mischief and raw, aching, hopeful love for people-animals is impressive. Poor, billion-year-old Devil! Friends: go read this. I REALLY want to discuss this with you all someday.

Also, cover art: easily my favorite this year.

Another tender, entertaining adventure of humanity and the universe (read Reincarnation Blues last year). Love Michael Poore's story-weaving.

3.5 stars. This fun novel is basically the devil’s examination of humanity throughout history. He helps Ben Franklin. He is at the Battle of Gettysburg. He gets his own reality show. He despises humans but in the end sees that they’re actually okay sometimes. I find this author to be really creative, although kind of vulgar. He is really good with developing character.

Although frequently amusing, it mostly just reminded me of how awful people are to each other and the precariousness of life.

Whoa! I've finally made it through this awesome novel! The only thing I'm sorry about is that I've been to lazy to read it (I've been reading it for Idunno, a month or so). This book definitely deserves to be read in one sitting, it really is that good. Big recommendation from my part.

Best ending sentence to a book of all time. Hands down.

So very good. The person who recommended this did so for my love of Gilligan's Wake, and how right she was. It is excellent and funny and wry and a little sacrilegious if you're into that sort of thing. The Devil packs his pipe not with tobacco but field mice. He is made of wood. He has a thing to say about Robert Johnson, Woodstock, and reality television. He can be swayed by love. God stole his girlfriend. So good.

Poor John Scratch. It turns out the devil is just an angel who loves the Earth a little too much, who gets caught up in the effort to make humanity so bright and shiny that it can compete with heaven and help him win back the heart of his eternal love. It's hard not to have sympathy with the devil, for all his faults, by the end of this original and intriguing novel.
