I started reading it and even though I couldn’t pinpoint what the issue was, I didn’t feel invested enough to read more than ten pages in one go and it took me a few days to get into it. But then it changed and I ended up enjoying it a lot! A little different than what I’m used to, and even though it’s a school for people in the magic world, I didn’t feel a resemblance to Harry Potter as some have pointed out.

4 stars! Fascinating and intriguing. Although sowie reviewers point out that the writing is tedious and repetitive, I would argue that this perfectly underlines the experience of living in The Scholomance — tedious, repetitive work has do be done just to stay alive, eat, collect magic energy, and… well… study. It’s truly a deadly education!

Another point that will be loved or hated is the elaborate inner monologue and exposition… but again, this perfectly represents the experience of the students. They NEED to weigh every piece of information, historical knowledge and every tiny word they say because it will have GRAVE consequences for their survival and social status — two factors that seem to be of equal importance to the Scholomance students.

The reason why it receives 4 instead of 5 stars: It isn’t deeply impactful or life changing. Furthermore, some descriptions are far too graphic and gory.

I enjoyed the main character’s personality and talents that are so exquisitely juxtaposed to the ones of her mother. The theme of an outsider that used to be shunned finally and slowly forming friendships and connections is heartwarming (although the connections are sometimes restricted to someone saving her a seat at a table, a snack or a T-Shirt… because those would usually be hard-earned or traded. Seriously. Even a scrap of metal is worth more than its weight in gold. Every gram is precious. It’s tedious, mean and stressful beyond belief, so that it becomes part of this funnily grotesque world).

Her narrator’s voice is funny, witty, deadpan and serious at all the right times. Overall, the audiobook version in German was a good choice.

Enjoyed it! El was a sarcastic main character, which I’m usually all for, but for some reason she felt a liiiiil bit forced sometimes. I liked the discussion of class and family in the book, would love to know more about Gwen in continuations.

I craved more relationship things in the story but I understand the reason for the lack of it. Plot wise the story dragged on a bit but overall, I liked it.

The first half of the book is a bit of a slog to get through. That’s the only reason I give it less than five stars. El is a deeply mistrustful character and that shows in the fact she would rather be introspective about her world and give the reader long paragraphs of world building exposition than build relationships with characters. After you get through the first half of A Deadly Education it reads quickly because of her relationships with Liu, Aadhya, and of course Orion Lake.
I got to the kicking my feet in my bed while reading stage when Orion finally kissed Galadriel. And the t-shirt of course that was the cherry on top. Fuck the enclave kids except him and I hope to god that Chloe becomes better in the second book.

3.75 stars I would have bumped this up to a solid 4 stars if I was not a bit confused about the magic system and school system. At first, I didn't care for how the story was shoving information at the readers, and still think it was a bit fast in giving out info but all the info was important. My main dislink is how long the chapters were, and that is something that may only affect me, I prefer shorter chapters to have more stopping points, but not a huge factor in the long run. By the end of the novel I was invested and now and have the next book in my TBR.
