Jesus Christ. I thought after listening to The Good Daughter and Pieces of Her I might be a little desensitized to Karin Slaughter. Nope.
This book was so horrific and so good. I will say it probably didn't hit me as hard because listening to it rather than taking the words in with my own eyes gave me a level of distance. This might be the opposite for most people but I'm a visual person.
I wouldn't say Paul being alive was the biggest twist but it also never even crossed my mind. The one silver lining of that was that Claire got to effing kill him like he deserved. Ugh, what a POS.
I'm so glad both Claire and Lydia made it out alive. If one of them had been killed I would've been devastated. But it was thoroughly satisfying. And upsetting. And brilliant.
I do wish there had maybe been more mystery around the death of Paul's parents. That's such an insane way to die that it had to have been orchestrated, right?
Also, fun fact: I was listening to the audiobook (LOVE Kathleen Early as a narrator) and somehow returned it to the library mid sentence. I was trying to return a different book and Pretty Girls vanished. And had holds! A two week wait! So I had to go to the library before work this morning to get the physical copy just so I could read those last breathless 50 pages. What a rush.

Longer than it needed to be! There were diary entries from their father. Some of them were interesting and important, but some just went on and on for no good reason. I get it. He spent all of his time trying to figure out what happened to his daughter; he was depressed and destroyed his marriage. I don't need the play-by-play. There were other areas where the narration went on too long, and it impacted the pacing -- hurt the suspense factor. I think it was the worst around 70% percent. That's when I increased the speed on the audiobook from 1.75 to 2.30 because I was sooo ready to be done.
I'm pretty sure the only people that were described as not white were a group of burglars and a murderer. They were black. I wasn't a fan of that, honestly.
The ending was great! Loved it.
I cared more about the mystery than the characters, honestly.

Graphic: Gun violence, Torture, Excrement, Murder
Moderate: Sexual assault, Stalking
Minor: Infidelity, Dementia
Did not finish this book, very graphic. Read trigger warnings before starting.
