Es ist eines der erfolgreichsten deutschen Bücher und Filme und das auch zu Recht.

Man fühlt alles, was dem Soldaten Paul passiert sehr stark mit, da man sich sehr in die Figur rein fühlt.
Ich denke nicht, dass ich im Ansatz den Schmerz und das Leid nachvollziehen kann, was die Soldaten in diesem Krieg erlebt haben und ich möchte es auch nicht.
Trotzdem bekommt man mit dem Buch ein Gefühl dafür.

Es ist so interessant, wie der Charakter Paul innen immer mehr stierb und es am Ende nur noch die Hülle ist, die weiter lebt.
Dieser Zustand wird auch in einem Satz beschrieben: „ Wir sind gefühllose Tote, die durch einen Trick, einen gefährlichen Zauber noch laufen und töten können.“

Krieg macht sehr viel mit Menschen und es sind meist nur ein paar wenige, reiche die diese Entscheidungen treffen können und andere müssen, wie in diesem Buch beschrieben, darunter leiden.

A truly bleak and visceral condemnation of war and government, written beautifully with a hopeless conclusion. The present tense and boyish adventures mixed with the gruesome descriptions of death in the trenches was really something. I found the horse shooting and hospital scenes especially harrowing, and Paul's realization that regardless of if he survives the war or not that his life is over before it started was gut-wrenching.

However I did find it a bit hard to connect to the story and characters, especially in the first half. The non-linear jumps from monotonous life on the front, to intense and gory action sequences, to long philosophical musings and landscape descriptions made it hard for me to engage with the writing. I think that was just the headspace I was in and ultimately I can't really find much fault with this book. Plus it was burned by the Nazis, which in itself highlights how important of a read this is.
