Some of the characters did not act the way I'd want based on Austen's versions, but this was a very fun read nonetheless. My favorite were the interactions between the younger Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney.

The locked room kind of whodunnit I sn’t my favorite, so I found this a bit slow as the characters only gradually found tiny bits of information to advance the mystery. But I really enjoyed the interplay between the two leads, the revisiting of familiar  Austen characters, and the conclusion to the mystery. Might be more appealing to diehard Austen fans because of the omniscient narrative jumping around from POV to POV, but still entertaining.

meh. won't be continuing. a bit predictable, fun at times, but not worth the hours i spent listening to the audiobook (great narration though!)

i literally can't imagine how you could become invested in this book without already having read austen's work, though.

also... there are some big icks that i need to mention here.
1. the author makes a big deal in the opening notes about defending the historical liberties she takes with the timelines of austen's novels (to justify how and why all these characters are interacting together even though the novels are set during different years).
2. the author then follows this with a note saying that historical accuracy is like suuuuper important, so it's perfectly okay that i use the g slur!!!
3. and then she gives no warning for the homophobia depicted in the book. some characters challenge the homophobia to a very vague and inconclusive degree (as much as you can expect for a book set in the 1800s) but like... the genuinely upsetting homophobia in this book is CLEARLY a lazy plot device.

completely respect that authors writing historical novels must make ethical considerations about all this stuff, and i'm not asking for a historical mystery novel that pretends homophobia didn't exist during the 1800s, but i am asking for better writing than "teehee time to use homophobia as a lazy plot device and probably cause harm to any queer readers who pick up my book uwu!"

This was a cozy mystery. As someone who doesn't know all of Jan Austen's work, I was very confused by all the characters and ended up having to map out who everyone was.
