ok so i see why people were so negative about this book. the idea was amazing, a story from a demon's pov, but the whole printing press and angels and demons war was kinda cheesy, and i, as a HUGE Clive Barker fan actually expected more. as always Barker blew my mind away with creating weird characters with unique and creepy features. Barker is my idol for writing Horror novels (at least creating horrific characters) but this book could be sooooooo much better.

Having a book insult you and beg you to burn it from the first page, turns out to be surprisingly interesting. There are some great passages, but the marvel of the story is the way it beckons the reader to interact.

Not Barker's best work. The "Burn this book! Burn it now!" got tiring very fast. It became almost juvenile. I couldn't get past how obnoxious his insistence became. The entire novel was just really odd, and not the good kind of odd I expect from Barker.

honestly did not know what to expect with my first ever brush with clive barker in text format- but i was happily blown away. the audiobook read by doug bradley (the og pinhead!) was just so... delightful? couldn't have felt like a better voice given to jakabob. the whole thing felt like a more grim, intense take on good omens- and for what it's worth i mean that as the highest of compliments.
i loved the medieval vibes, and the ending did make me feel a touch of genuine emotion so. personally, it's a slay.

I didn't hate it. I thought I was going to at first, but the story grew on me. However, the whole burn this book thing did not grow on me. About 2/3 of the way through I was ready to strike a match.
I enjoyed the story of Jakabok Botch's life, and yes, I even enjoyed Jakabok's wit and humor ... most of it. But the obnoxious parts were so over the top that they brought obnoxious to a whole new level. I wanted to either strike that match or throw the book over my balcony. Or even better, strike the match then throw the book over the balcony, record it, and title the video screaming demon.

I read this quite some time ago and skimmed through it to review here. I had forgotten how juvenile/YA this book feels. Quirky story that reads as a memoir remembering days past. Some of the writing really sucked me in...most of it was just there to fill pages it seemed. Those pieces, like descriptions of a setting that has no meaning or does not add to the story, is what starts to pull me off track. Overall not bad, but not my favorite.
