this book really frustrated me. I felt let down by the ending, angry and sad. I think that was the point thought
dark emotional mysterious sad medium-paced

An absorbing meditation on motherhood, crime and punishment, and “big brother” (big mother? Haha).

Overall I enjoyed this book, the premise was good - it made me suitably angry and disgusted. But I don't know I felt like it was trying to do too many messages at once and none of them felt finished. It got repetitive by like 3/4 of the way through and I felt it could've done more with the concept.

I also didn't like the ending. I'm not saying all books need happy endings but I wanted it to be at least more satisfying than it was - kind of felt like the entire rest of the book was a waste of time at the end. Maybe that was the point but I didn't like it.

Dnf at 70%. Felt like getting hit in the head over and over with the same frustrating and hard-to-read commentary on how cruel the world is. I get it already.

Still processing this one.

Am I a terrible person for disliking Frida from the get go? Is it hindsight  and projecting? Is it my actually taste in characters? Idek.

Also, I hella relate to and like Susanna- more than I think I’m supposed to. Minus the very cognizant affair with Gust that set it all off… All she’s guilty of in real time is loving and caring for a kid that isn’t hers. Frida doesn’t deserve what she went through, but Su isn’t the enemy. Am I projecting? I’m projecting.

Loving other people’s children is hard. Coparenting with someone you didn’t choose is hard. Being villainized for existing in a heavily stereotyped role is hard. Navigating your inner monologue between women supporting women and thinking people like her really do need to pull it together…..
