sheesh, this writing style made my head physically hurt. I thought I was seeing double with so many run on sentences. Felt like I was losing my damn mind.
*3.5 stars*
I'm feeling very conflicted about this book. On one hand, I adored the couple in this. They were so sweet together, they understood and comforted each other, they communicated really well, there was a refreshing lack of unnecessary conflict between them, and the steamy scenes were really good. I loved the grumpy/sunshine dynamic and the slow-burn romance. Moreover, even when it was a low-angst, low-conflict, slow-paced book, I was entertained the whole time.
On the other hand, I didn't feel completely comfortable with the way this handled the appearance of the hero. It's established very early on that he is ugly, which I appreciated because we need more protagonists who don't look like movie stars. Nonetheless, this fact was repeated so many times by the main characters, by every single side character, and by random characters that only appeared once. Honestly, I think it was mentioned on almost every single page of this book, so I feel like it was overdone and it reduced the hero to his appearance which I think was the opposite of the message that it was trying to send.
Funny rom com. Spice is light, but the story was funny. Especially the bird.
This was such a lovely read - I absolutely adored it. Pet and Matthias are absolutely adorable and seeing them fake date and become best friends and accepting their feelings for each other was just an amazing experience. They are both so protective of each other that I was reading this book with the biggest smile on my face.
I’m a sucker for any sort of bodyguard/secret service type of romance novel. This was a cute, fast read. I enjoyed the characters and humor and it tugged at my heartstrings a couple of times. A good book when you otherwise have a lot going on but just need a pleasant escape that doesn’t require a lot of effort to read.
This was pretty bad with every trope under the sun but I read the entire thing while I was sick and couldn’t spare too many brain cells
When I say that this book is one of the best books i’ve read with the fake dating trope, i mean it! In Codename Charming we follow Pet and Matthias who both work for the royal family. When false claims are being made regarding Pet and their employer, Pet and Matthias begin a fake relationship to drive the attention away.
Petunia De Vere is such a GRAND character. She is the type of person where if you were to meet her no words could describe how much of an amazing person she is. She is so enthusiastic and cares so much for those who surround her. Matthias might appear to be intimidating and mean but in reality he isn’t. As an ex soldier he is very disciplined and serious about the task at hand. Although he doesn’t show it much he’s incredibly caring and loyal to those he holds close.
Pet and Matthias were so similar due to their life experiences. The best way to describe their relationship is by saying that they both didn’t know they needed each other until they found one another. It’s like they both complete this hole in their life that they didn’t know needed to be filled.
There were so many things throughout this book that made me laugh my ass off but there was also very emotional aspects. It was an equal balance of both. Overall I really enjoyed Codename Charming and highly recommend! Can’t wait for more of Lucy Parker’s work.
Thank you to Netgalley, Avon and Harper Voyager for the eARC of this book!
