Another excellent Gaskell story! She always hits it out of the park. :) Will elaborate more later haha
This was not really what I was expecting it to be. I thought it was going to focus on one person, but instead the focus was on the whole town. The narrator kind of rambled a little too much for me, and the numerous characters got sort of confusing at times. The premise was nice and the town of Cranford was an odd place full of spinsters. It was clear that Gaskell's point was to focus more on the norms of a society in this one rather than a traditional novel of the era like North and South which I loved.
I didn’t originally realise this contained not just Cranford the novel but a short story set in the fictional town, another short story Mr Harrison’s Confessions and a novella My Lady Ludlow. The gentle humour and social comedy of Cranford and Mr Harrison’s Confessions worked for me best as My Lady Ludlow had an extremely convoluted narration and a triple time scheme which included a rather tedious segment set in the French Revolution, though there was a very neat twist at the end. All of the stories dealt with the opportunities, or lack of them, available to women, the rigid class system of a small English country town and the changes brought about by the passage of time. A gentle and interesting read.
