Dostoevsky’s prose in The Idiot is undeniably incredible, and Part 1 had me fully engaged. However, the story slowed down for me at the start of Part 2 before picking up again in Part 3. While its themes are fascinating, I found Crime and Punishment a much more gripping read. A thought-provoking novel, but not my personal favorite.

I started this book because I want to read The Idiot by Elif Batuman and I thought sharing a title they might have some themes in common. I wanted to better understand the original. But it’s too boring LOL I just finished it by reading the spark notes 🤪 I tried to read crime and punishment too but I felt like the crime happened in the beginning?? Then it’s just him spiraling and living with it… (the punishment) but I’m not finishing that either. I get the idea but again… boreeeed. Maybe one day. I will consider the brothers karamazov and MAYBE the notes from the underground before I shelve Dostoyevsky completely… but I am only reading to be in the know, Russian literature is not my cup of tea. I recognize the value tho.. but I’ll just read about it rather than read it 😮
