this book is under 300 pages and yet it felt twice as long. the beginning was promising and the end was exciting(?) but there was so much boringness in the middle that even though there was a lot happening at the end, i had already forgotten what the plot was and who the characters were. i’m notoriously a hater of fiction that isn’t single POV so i’m sure this will appeal to other people, but i thought that the narration was too chaotic to follow. i had to read reviews to understand the book, even though i read the whole thing, but even so i still don’t think i completely understand. too much going on, and yet the whole middle felt like nothing.

A really fun read, with accurate- seeming descriptions of early life in the west and certainly of “lone women’s” options. Then there is the fantasy/horror - just enough to keep you riveted.

This is the story of Adelaide Henry, who has just lost both her parents and her only known home and is traveling into Montana to a homestead bought sight unseen. With her is a trunk with a padlock that she has to watch - in case anyone tries to break in and gets lost.
The main characters were fantastic - LaValle is an incredible writer with no infuriating filling that smacks of ego. This book was so great I want to page-turn more of his novels!
