It dragged a little in the middle but the beginning and end were SO good. I loved the mixed text vibes, and the way it flowed was so interesting, especially in retrospect.
Well, the five stars I gave this book are now replaced with a one star rating.
I will rerate it with a five when/if the author clears her self-rating.

This book started picking up after awhile. It all ended in a nice neat package, convenient for all. But I did enjoy a lot of the symbolism and the torment of personal guilt. The book was very descriptive and I enjoyed the thought pattern of the internal dialogue.

This book hit a little too close to home. I live in the outskirts of town, surrounded by only a thousand trees and one of my greatest fears is getting lost in any of those woods. So yeah, I major freaked out. I Kept looking outside the window to see if the trees were any closer.

This book was broken up into 5 or 6 sections following the same overarching story. The first section was so creepy and ended on such a legitimately scary note that I was sure this was going to be a 4-5 star read. Unfortunately, the first section was definitely the best. I feel like the book dragged on too long even though it was only 350 pages or something. It could have easily lost 100 pages and probably would have been a creepier read. I wasn’t a huge fan of the love interest and really felt that this book didn’t need one, but the ending did help sway me to his side. Overall, a 2.5-3 star read, definitely didn’t need to be as long but was a creepy October read all together.

AND THE TREE’S CREPT IN is a dark, creepy, and thrilling read that will keep you hanging the entire way through. What you think is going on… It’s not…. And the ending of this book will shock you. WOW. I haven’t read a good horror novel in so long and Dawn Kurtagich really gave me something to be excited about with this one. It’s also the type of book that nightmares are made out of. Dawn adds these poems and creepy sayings throughout the book as well that really add to the creep factor. AND the cover?? It just says all of this without words. Anyway, this is a really great book and I am so glad I ended up reading it. Now I can’t wait to read THE DEAD HOUSE (her debut novel) but I am waiting for the month of October, just in time for Halloween. Soooooo…. The $10 I spent on this one… WORTH IT.
And the Trees Crept In starts off with Silla running through the forest with her little sister on her back to get to her aunt’s house. The way it starts off like this makes it immediately clear that something is terribly wrong and all that is sinister will slowly develop throughout the story. I don’t want to say too much about plot because really, this is the type of book that you just need to read for yourself. But I will say that Silla is one of those characters/narrators that you aren’t sure whether to believe or not. She is not “twisted” in an outwardly way but the things that she sees and hear make you wonder whether they are actually happening. Kind of like the narrator in The Tell Tale Heart, but on a totally different level. She is just plain unreliable… Or is she??? The secondary characters in this novel really bring the book to life and readers will look forward to learning more about Crazy Aunt Cathy and Silla’s sister, Nori. The setting is also absolutely perfect for this story as it takes place in a very old and decrepit mansion in the woods, standing all by itself. YIKES! Finally, the author adds vivid detail on the setting really making you feel like you are not only in this creepy mansion but inside Silla’s head as well.
Overall, this is an extremely well written and totally creepy novel that will leave you gasping the whole way though. There are times where I personally felt anxiety and this hasn’t happened when reading a scary book in a LONG time. Given all this, I would definitely recommend picking up this book. It’s fairly fast paced and you won’t have a hard time sitting down and finishing it all in one night.
