Commonly, I love the rival to an estate troupe, but I hardly call this couple rivals or enemies. The heroine was a victim of being a girl at that time, powerless and destitute. And her personality isn't making it any better. I found her very bland and had not much of a personality. Her damsel in distress manner, which the hero always so her to be, unfortunately, isn't very endearing. Not to mention, she exuded a lot of secondhand embarrassment on me. Like, girl, if you going to have a nonexistent personality, at least do not trip and fall in the most unfortunate of places.

I rarely stop reading a book before I'm done but this was boring. There's nothing to keep me going. :(

I absolutely love Jennie Goutet's books and An Amiable Foe proved that once again. Marianne and Perry are such likable characters and it was easy to want to continue reading to see how they would get their happily ever after. I loved that it was from both their points of view and that they both had gumption and wanted to prove themselves. The setting of the castle was wonderful and you could feel the love Marianne had for her home. An Amiable Foe was the perfect first book for the Castles and Courtship series because I cannot wait to read the rest of the series as it is released.

Another lovely sweet romance from Jennie Goutet. Poor Marianne was very relatable…if it could go wrong for her, it did. Over the course of the story she finds herself losing her home and increasingly alone. Perry was chasing approval and acceptance through social status. The story is a slow-build journey from foes to friends to love as Marianne finds confidence and identity, and Perry learns what really matters to him and what brings him true happiness. I loved both Marianne and Perry. Even though Perry comes in as the enemy, over the course of the story we see what a good, kind, and thoughtful man he is underneath his society persona. This book is well worth the time to read it. It’s a beautiful story of growing towards love of self and of another.

The Amiable Foe by Jennie Goutet
A Castles and Courtships novel

This is a sweet historical romance about a girl who has, for all intensive purposes, grown up alone without a guiding hand to teach her how to move about in society. This is well and fine with her until she learns her beloved castle was left to another after the death of her uncle and she must find her own way. In comes Percy, a man on a mission to prove himself. He has been gifted the castle by his uncle and told to get it up to snuff.

This is a fun quick read. I loved watching the romance unfold between these very different but seemingly similar people. What a great start to a to new series. I can’t wait to read them all.

I liked this one! I haven’t read a Goutet book in a bit and I enjoyed being back in her writing style and storytelling. I loved the castle setting and the dynamics between the main couple, Perry and Marianne.

The little dash of mystery added some good forced proximity and I FELT for Marianna as she tried to navigate being a part of society. I haven’t seen much of this kind of plot decisions in historicals and I liked that unique atmosphere. I loved the way that Perry looked after Marianne and really grew into himself too. They were both people trying to take new steps forward and they found that way together.

I adore this cover. The audiobook was great and this was a nice read to spend my time with.
