I loved Patrice and her family, especially Zhaanat. I wanted more Thomas. He's the night watchman, after all, and his story is a fascinating one, and I wanted even more of a focus on his efforts to save his community. I loved getting to know all the different characters, though I could have done with less focus on Barnes and the Mormons.

“You cannot feel time grind against you. Time is nothing but everything, not the seconds, minutes, hours, days, years. Yet this substanceless substance, this bending and shaping, this warping, this is the way we understand our world.”

“When Thomas thought of his father, peace stole across his chest and covered him like sunlight.”

DNF. I tried. I really did. I got halfway through & realized that I just didn’t care. I was bored & finding excuses not to read. And I love to read. I have enjoyed other books by this author, but I couldn’t force myself through another page. 2 stars because I can’t bear to give it one. I acknowledge that it’s well written, but I just could not anymore.

Although a bit confusing at times, I believe this is a brilliant work. I think it’s a fitting telling of her Grandfathers story, which is a story that needs to be told.
