Much as I love Fitzgerald's books, this collection of her letters was only mildly interesting. It's edited by her son-in-law, whose footnotes are far too few (when has anyone ever said that?): he explains several trivialities while entirely ignoring more mysterious references. Fitzgerald comes across as a kind, thoughtful person, which reminds me of her friend Penelope Lively's comment, "as sharp as a knife is old Penelope, and goes to great lengths to pretend not to be.” (Sadly, there's no correspondence here between them.)
