This is a gripping and spooky graphic novel that follows the Locke family, who move to a creepy mansion filled with magical keys. The dark, detailed artwork and intense plot make it a thrilling read. I enjoyed the TV series adaptation too!

Did any of you ever see this movie?

Photobucket

I went into this movie after only seeing still photos and not really reading the synopsis thinking it was a kids movie (since the main charcater was a little girl) and full of awesome Jim Henson or Labryinth type characters and puppets! I was expecting a fun, creepy, but ultimately happy ending kind of movie.

That is NOT what I got!!

I think I looked like this when the movie was over...

So yeah - I knew this was inspired by HP Lovecraft, and that he wrote horror but I have never read one of his books and from the description here on goodreads I again was expecting a fun, creepy but ultimately happy ending kind of book.

Again that is NOT what I got!

I am not going to do a synopsis because Michelle gives a fantastic one in her review so I am just going to get into the nitty gritty of it all.

Holy crap this book is twisted, gorey, violent, and startling!

I finished it in complete confusion as I couldn't tell if I had even liked it or not. My gut reaction was not to read volume 2 because it was just so bloody, so effed up, and so just crazy! But the more I think of it the more I am finding myself liking it.

The shit those kids survive is beyond amazing. It's a miracle they all aren't rocking themselves to sleep in a mental asylum. So yeah the characters are strong, complex, and clearly defined. Plus the art and layout was fantastic. The colors were almost dull throughout making it even more sad, the pacing was tense as it switched from pas tto present, and the suspension was high from one chapter to anotehr as more and more secrets were revealed.

I am now definitely going to read volume 2 to find out what more this family survives and just how screwy HP Lovecraft's brain must have been to inspire such a dark story!

I can safely say that I had little to no interest in this series, despite all of the hype and enthusiasm surrounding it. Then, Comixology offered the first issue for free, so why not, I'll see what the fuss is about...

I literally finished reading the first issue, and purchased the trade digitally so that I could continue reading right away.

Wow, some of the pacing was definitely off, but I seriously enjoyed the mysteries presented in this book. I enjoy the changes in perspective from character to character. It not only moved the story along, but it also gave you immediate insight into what the characters are thinking/doing, and why.

I can’t recommend this series highly enough.

This is how you write a graphic novel. It's short but full of mystery, world building, and character development.
