Black Orchid is an interesting and strange take on a DC superhero that explores what we do in the face of violence and our search for purpose.

Wow, me giving a 5-star rating to a Neil Gaiman work with art by Dave McKean? Shocker.

3.5 stars. Worth reading for the visual component alone. The graphics are so lovely and atmospheric. The story is interesting, but imperfect.

I loved the idea of a perpetually victimized woman being re-made with these cool powers and abilities. However, the fact that she doesn't really contribute to that process kind of contradicts the empowerment aspect. The original Susan is described as the Blossoms' "mother," but her role is actually very passive. I mean, she inspired Phil, which lead to the experiments becoming successful, and she did donate part of her biological material (postmortem, without her consent), but there's very little active participation on her part. She's basically a tragic muse. Maybe I'm nitpicking, but since origin stories are so central in the world of comics, it felt like Black Orchid deserved a better, more triumphant one.

This is a very different kind of story. Interesting. Neil never disappoints.

I found the story to be quite imaginative and the artwork is absolutely amazing.

Beautifully done, Black Orchid is a mix of all sorts of things. Lex Luthor, Poison Ivy and Batman are all supporting characters in this. Now that I've finished it and sufficiently researched this, I realize it's an origin story for the DC character Black Orchid. Totally didn't know that going into this. Thought it was something wildly different. Just found out that she was pretty much famous for never having an origin story, and then Neil Gaiman did it and blew everyone's minds. Do I feel pretty silly? Sort of. Do I feel pretty? Always.

Not a hugely fleshed out story, but beautiful in how it reads with the gorgeous artwork.
