I give it 5 stars because of the great writing and astonishing drawing. The only things I regret are that the drawingstyle makes difficult to discern some characters at first sight, and sometimes the plant references are a bit redundant.

Great comic.

This is such a beautiful graphic novel... the colouring is just... phenomenal. Although I might be biased because purple is my favourite colour.
I did NOT know that this novel was in the DC universe so that was a surprise. The story is simple, but I like it. I like the idea of fringe superheroes like this.

The artwork is stunningly beautiful. The story was interesting, in how it blended the dreamy understanding of Black Orchid, with the hyperviolence of the villians. Would love to read a followup or see it on screen.

Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman at their peak. Belongs right next to Swamp Thing and Sandman in the DC/Vertigo rankings.

I love Dave McKean's illustrations, they are breathtaking. This isn't your usual comic book story, I think it's the first thing I've read by Neil Gaiman and I'll definitely be looking out for more of his work. The only criticism I would make is that I felt the story jumped a few times and I had to check I hadn't missed a page.

Bullet Review:

This was a really really crazy read. Gorgeous art and some really pretty fairytale-ish writing, but it ended up being something completely different than I expected. I didn't realize that Black Orchid was a DC superhero, nor did I expect so many DC superheroes and villains to appear. I mostly checked it out because of Neil Gaiman. Neil Gaiman did a good job, but the writing at times was so esoteric and elusive, that I got lost trying to figure it out.

But the drawings were purty!

This is beautiful, with a definite fever-dream quality. Now I’m torn on going back to my Sandman reread or starting my Swamp Thing reread.

This is for the serious graphic novels reader - I admit to getting a bit lost and not quite getting all the comics-pop-culture refs. But the colours ... oh, the colours ...
