It's fun to see Henry grow up some. He is now 11 and can have a paper route. I appreciate the focus on hard work and responsibility. Henry is a good role model and "friend" for my kids to have. This story had a fuzzy-feeling-inducing ending, as Henry becomes friends with the new kid and a confusing situation is resolved. I like those types of revelations and enjoy discussing them with the kids. Kai can't wait to move on to the next book. He got angry that we couldn't start it tonight after finishing this one.

I love how Cleary connects her chapters. Each one is it's own adventure but they all circle back to the main point. Which is, in this case, the all important paper route.

Read as part of my Beverly Cleary author study. Illustrations by Louis Darling. Henry has been filling in on Scooter’s paper route for a few books, but now he’s determined to get his own. However, he’s not old enough, so he has to wait. Or, in true Henry Huggins fashion, try to prove his worth. Except how can he, when four kittens need to be rescued and old papers need to be collected for a school drive?
A new boy named Murph moves into the neighborhood at the end of this book. Henry wants to become his friend, but Murph seems like a genius! He’s building his own robot and doesn’t have much in common with Henry, except that he’s also interested in a paper route...

Our family listened to this while on a drive, and we all enjoyed it. Even as Henry lived in a different age of childhood, his adventures are still very relatable and engaging; Cleary is a master at presenting a child's interior thoughts and motivations.

All three boys are thoroughly enjoying the Henry books as read aloud selections, even though the older boys have heard these stories before!!

Overall not a bad book. Henry is about to turn 11 and wants a paper route. When one of his friends gets chicken pox he temporarily gets his wish. A new boy in the neighbourhood threatens his hope of a new route. Ramona is a brat who makes me so happy I never had kids. Henry gets a new cat, helps his class win a paper drive. Cute quick read.

Henry really wants a paper route of his own, but at first he's a year too young, and then a new kid moves to the neighborhood and quickly becomes competition...
Charlie is just loving the Henry books so far, and it's fun to read them with him (although Henry's attitude toward girls is a bit neanderthal-like).
