this is probhably around the 4.7 stars mark. I like getting more Alexia, Genevieve and Floote and I love the dry humour. Honestly this mainly looses points becasue I don't enjoy lord Maccons charachter in this book. It ended well and I cant wait to read the next one.
After the HOLY SHIT ending of the last book, I couldn't wait to find out where the story went next. Slight spoiler: Italy. There are more dirigibles, killer mechanical ladybugs, Templars and vampire assassins. There is also public groveling. I couldn't stop turning the pages.

The Parasol Protectorate series drops off a bit in this third volume. The plot seems a bit rushed (faceless beings attack them all of a sudden our of nowhere and are just as suddenly dispatched), though of course entertaining. What was so fun about the first two books were the characters: the amazingly annoying sisters and clueless mother, Lord Maccon and his overmasculine but adorable blustering, Ivy and loyalty and ugly hats, Lord Akeldama and his clothes, etc. All make only brief appearances here, and the alternative characters just aren't as attention grabbying. Oh well. Looking forward to the next one.
My favorite of the series. The pacing is good, the plot twists are fun, the settings are touristy-fun, but the best part for me is the truly inventive alternative history. The author could do a better job of describing the steampunk elements - shinier and more clockwork, please - but the series is highly entertaining.
For some reason, I stopped reading or listening to this series. I have no idea what caused this, but I've remedied it by having this on my Simply Audio wish list and had it arrive in my mailbox. And immediately began listening to it in the car. And enjoying it.
Lady Alexia Maccon is of sturdy and soulless stock in a time where sturdy and soulless wasn't particularly stylish. But she makes the best of it, part of why I love her character, especially as it helps with her position as a member of Queen Victoria's Shadow Council, an agency that keeps the paranormal beasties at bay.
But Lady Maccon gets dismissed from said Council when rumor has it that the baby Alexia is carrying might not be her husband's, Lord Maccon the Werewolf. Werewolves are not known to be able to get a human woman pregnant, so there is no way that Alexia could be carrying his child.
Alexia departs England for the Continent in search of answers. She travels with a motley crew and into plenty of danger.
I love steampunk due to the alternate history it portrays. The imagination of the writers who create their steampunk world can be exceptional and Gail Carriger is one of the most exceptional of all. She doesn't overwhelm the story with the gadgets, they enhance the beauty of the storytelling.
Definite recommend and I will not stray from the series again.

I liked this book, a fun romp through Europe, though I must say I love love love how and what Lord Maccon was drinking to get drunk. Fun and had surprising little twists that makes you laugh. Still loving this series.
