Vampires and werewolves and ghosts, oh my!

HEARTLESS doesn't come out till next July; whatever shall I do? I am truly enjoying this little jaunt through steampunk Victoriana.

bought for kindle.

4.5

The unfortunate cliffhanger turns into a major plot point into this novel which ultimately arrives at a very unsatisfying and unrealistic conclusion. I don't want to spoil anything but let's just say it seems very much out of character for Ms. Tarabotti to do exactly what she did at the end of this novel and I think it ends up ruining the tone of the series for me. I'll still finish off the series because well, I already have the books and I still think these are fun novels but this one falls off a lot in quality compared to the first 2.

DID NOT FINISH: 55%

This novel should have some content warnings like: verbal and emotional abuse, toxic male behavior, a depth of st*pidity and passivity that is out of character for the characters as they've been written to date, this book is what made me stop reading this series, give my books away, and unfollow the author. I know it was out before cw were commonplace but still

Major plot spoilers below
Alexa is pregnant. Her husband thinks she clearly cheated and kicks her out after drunkenly and belligerently berating her. Her family and friends and employer abandon her, except for the one lesbian friend she has who says she'll help her but also spends a lot of her time hitting on her. As a not straight woman, ick. Classless behavior that would make sense if written by someone who's not a lesbian but would you look at that, that's not the case here.
Now, I'm not saying that confusion on her husband's part isn't logical nor would heated and sometimes mean words. After all, he's a bit thick, and a man after all, why would he understand how babies are made and how her abilities would make pregnancy possible? I figured it out as soon as pregnancy came up, it is not complicated at all to anyone who understands how the characters have been defined in this world.
My issue lies in the extreme to which all these behaviors are acted out and the utter doormat behavior of a character who has, to date, stood up for herself without question. Instead of using her brain, as she has up to this point, she cowers away, takes the shunning, and leaves town to "look for an explanation".
I can not read a novel or series or watch media where the lead is a spineless martyr to anyone with a foot they want to put on the lead's neck. Let alone where the character's husband starts up with domestic ab*se out of nowhere.

Do yourself a favor and skip this whole series. The author clearly has little respect for her characters or her readers. The "plot devices" employed in this novel are juvenile at best, at worst, convey a deep rooted belief that we are all stupid enough to think this is ok.

This was my favourite so far :)

Audiobook (Emily Gray)

3/5

Summary: Slightly comedic, steampunk, pnr romance - the continuing story of Lord Conall Maccon (werewolf alpha) and former advisor to the Queen,  soulless Alexia. Mystery, drama and a lot of angst continue when Alexia takes off across Europe in search of answers, leaving Conall behind due to their marital troubles.

Stats: PNR/HR - Werewolf M/"Soulless" F, third in a series, does not stand alone, very limited open door/fade to black.

Notes: The series is slowing down... and I'm enjoying it less.  I've not much sympathy for Conall though most of this one.
