Historial Noir where the Chow sisters work to solve Lulu Wong's murder. While I loved the family dynamics, time period and setting, a good amount of the subplots felt rushed. The intersectionality between being a woman, chinese and the class issues faced was mentioned in a few sentences throughout the book but those themes never really went any deeper. It felt like the autho  was constantly on the verge of making a point but never quite went any deeper than a surface level analysis or character development based on those factors. I also felt that the ending was a bit rushed, plot lines that I still had questions/curiosities about were wrapped up in a single sentence when they had been major plotpoints earlier. Overall it was an easy read but i had hoped for a bit more nuanced take given the characters, setting and plotlines.

In a way, this reminded me of The Widows of Malabar Hill. Historical fiction featuring strong female detectives in time periods when women did not have many rights, with many details about different cultures woven into the stories in relevant and interesting ways.

I found the writing style to be really annoying partially because it was just irritating and partially because it was a bit too middle grade for my liking.
