karl didn't deserve allthat:(

Amerika is the most frustrating novel I've read in a long time. URRGH.

Three and a half. Not kafkas best but decent enough for a novel, imo.

Franz Kafka is one of my favorite writers, and the fact that Amerika remained unfinished is a great tragedy for the literary world (on the other hand, the fact that Max Brod saved Kafka's works is a great boon to it).

Karl is an interesting, if weak, character who is set in an amazing approximation of America. That fact that Kafka never made it to the country makes this almost a fantasy world. The desks of America open up so many drawers they become like Mary Poppin's bag. The Statue of Liberty holds a sword, not a flame. There is a bridge to connect New York and Boston. This all adds together in a dreamlike way to make America more mythical than it was.

With the novel being unfinished, you will not find answers to some of the questions you have. But ultimately that is alright. I quite enjoyed my time reading this book, even though there are passages that drag a bit.

Almost a chapter into it and I can tell that this is going to be a pain to get through.

Yeah... this book is a pain and also a major WTF. It's amusing in that way, but yeesh, a pain to get through and I wonder what people see in it...
