I think I would have enjoyed this more if I did not listen to it as an audiobook. I had a hard time keeping track of the chronology and there was a lot of jumping around. I'm sure there are sources within the physical book that help you place the time better.

This is so dense, I feel like I'm not retaining anything atm
Maybe I'll give this another try at a different time

My first foray into Rome for a long while, very accessible to a casual reader and someone with an interest in Roman history and learning more about Roman history.
Surprised how nice it was to read and it flowed very well, didn't seem a drag or chore to get through at any point.
My first book by Mary Beard and certainly not my last. Re-whetted my appetite for the Classical World.

What do you know - I guess I am really really not a fan of Mary Beard. This book was better than 12 Caesars since it did give me a more or less complete history of the roman republic. Still it managed to be both boring and over technical. I'm really not sure how this book received all the hype it has.

I bought this book in Rome, in July 2019. I've been reading this ever since. I cannot believe I've finally finished it. Look at me go, Mom.
This was fascinating and surprisingly funny. I'd say get the audiobook if you want to read this, because it's so dense, and listen to it while reading it physically so you actually retain the information.
