I love this series, but this book goes above and beyond. In a time where legislators want to erase trans people, María Isabel Sánchez Vegara has decided to tell a simple story about a woman finally able to be who she was meant to be.

Lovely concept of this series to showcase all those amazing people who made a difference in our societies, from one way to an other. It's a quick read, very accessible for kids.

Here we learn about Laverne Cox's journey. How arts and dance help her from escaping bullying at a young age to becoming her trueself. It also shows how the support of her mom helped her too. And now she's inspiring others and fighting for the rights of other trans people.

These books are always was such a great way for children to understand a variety of different topics and this was no different. Explaining the LGBTQ+ community in easy to understand term for young children will help increase acceptance and allyship in future generations.

This picture book biography is written about Lavern Cox, a transgender woman who experienced significant bullying as she came to terms with her gender identity. She found herself in the world of dance and won a scholarship to join the Alabama School of Fine Arts. She finally felt able to truly express herself and try new things. She went on to act and dance in theatre and on film and was then able to fully transition so the way she looked on the outside matched how she felt on the inside. The meaning of transgender and the message sent by this book will be easy for children to understand because it is really about how someone feels not discussing the details of transitioning or anything related to a person’s reproductive organs.

Each page has beautiful, colour-filled pages with 3-4 lines of text. The story ends with a timeline and some pictures/biographical information about her. There is a lot of great biographical information, but it also follows a story that will hook young readers. I believe this book would be best fit for children in the 7-11 age range. As a grade 3 teacher I could definitely see this book in my classroom library in the future! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review a digital ARC of this book!

I love how this series allows me to find out about people I have never heard of. And should have heard of. In this case, it is Laverne Cox, a transgender activist, who was assigned male at birth, even though she told people throughout her life that she was really a girl.

And it is age appropriate, for kids to read and if they have more questions, to ask them.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

We loved this book! The art was beautiful and this story was very special. Sharing Laverne Cox’s story, success, and joy is so important and very needed. This representation and the message of allowing children to find out who they are as they grow is very powerful.

Thank you so much to Laverne Cox, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, NetGally, and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for this ARC!
