DID NOT FINISH

Well written, but I wish the plotting was just a tad slower

It was decent. I think I’ll read the next one, but my socks are still on.

This book has a number of elements to be great. I think it's an interesting story worth telling in Star Wars lore; I love that someone is willing to tell a Star Wars story where you don't recognize anyone, something George Lucas and Disney are totally incapable of.

It also seems difficult to tell stories from a villain's perspective with motivations that are relatable and believable. Bane's story hits the right checkpoints, but it's too focused on the rules of space blackjack, the techniques of lightsaber fighting, and other technical details. I needed more moments along Bane's journey, and more emotion throughout.

It needs to be called out that there's only one female character and she's a disservice. The fact that she at least weaponizes her sexuality does not make it okay that it's her only trait.

This is not a good audio narrator, he has maybe 3 voices and a few weak accents. I'm generally against sound effects in audiobooks, but Star Wars has awesome sounds - except whoever made these choices is demented.
"Two random guys are fist fighting in Chapter 1? Cue the music from when the Millennium Falcon is escaping Darth Vader's star destroyer!"
"Two bad guys are chatting? Bring me the March of the Empire!"
When the choices weren't totally insane they were usually overdone, but a lot of it ended up working for me.

The book is frustrating over what it does wrong and how great it could be with a few tweaks, but I still had fun and I think I want to remember the rest of what happens.
