The story is told through diary snippets so much is left off page, colored by the main character's views as well as the natural distance between reader and story. There is not much to bond the reader to any of the characters but the story is still satisfying enough. I was also appreciative of the discussion questions after the author's note as they helped reframe one or two things for me.
Moderate: Gun violence, Colonisation, and Violence
Minor: Slavery, Mass/school shootings, and Car accident
There is a scene at the school where a gun goes off. The main character mentions that poor mothers often sell their daughters to wealthier families and those daughters almost never get to go to school.callme_tippy's review against another edition

This was a delightful read, I enjoyed the realistic characters and their portrayals as well as the choice to have the book be told through diary entries.

Meh. This book is told through a young girl’s (I think? Her age is never mentioned) journal entries. It takes place in Haiti in 2000 and follows her journey to America as she and her family struggle to adjust. I feel like this book had the potential to provide great insight, but there were so few details given about the situation in Haiti and the fact that so little happened made this book fall short. The book was extremely anticlimactic and I was rather disappointed, especially since I’ve heard such good things about Edwidge Danticat.
