This reminds me of books by Dorothea Benton Frank. It's a story of second chances and choices. I liked it.

Marcie needs a break from her work, her husband, and well her life. So she decides to drive. She ends up in Florida on the beach. Flint comes across her on his morning walk. Flint lets her stay with him until she can sort her life out and get her car back...it's currently in the impound lot along with her purse and everything else. These two don't really have a lot in common but they form a friendship.

This book could be a Hallmark movie. The Florida coast with storms and an unlikely friendship, I can just picture it now on tv. I liked how the story was told in Marcie's and Flint's POV. It was interesting to see how different and similar they both are. I liked knowing what was going on in their brains. I think it helped round the story out. Flint was my favorite! I thought he was funny. I love grumpy old men. While I thought the story was interesting, it didn't hook me. I'm not sure if it was because I haven't gone through the things Marcie went through, but it was hard to get attached to the story.

Marcie Malone thought she was living a picture-perfect life with her husband, Will, until a heartbreaking loss has her abandoning her life in Atlanta. She winds up in Florida and finds her way into the heart of a crotchety old man, Flint, and a wonderful friendship forms.

This story was a bit slow for me at times but I loved the relationship between Flint and Marcie! If you’re looking for a romance novel - this is probably not the best choice but I definitely recommend for those looking for a story about a woman finding her voice and identity.

Thank you Berkley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Review coming in Booklist! I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book based on the premise, but I LOVED it. Finished in one day.

70 year old, crotchety Flint is a great character. That he takes Marcie in when he finds her on the beach is the best thing to happen to her. I enjoyed her self discovery and his awakening.

It was time to look forward, not backward. Sometimes you had to let go of some things to discover others.

What a delightful book about an unexpected friendship. Endearing, whimsical and humourous this book ticked all the boxes for me. I just loved this story so much, these characters stole my heart, even the secondary ones, and the plot sucked me in right away. I felt for Marcie and Jessie, especially as I was very young when I had my first child (17). Making life changing decisions is never easy, making them alone is harder. I love quirky books and this also had a wonderful setting on the shore, in Florida and really felt like I was there. The book cover is brilliantly beautiful and so is the inside. This is my first read by Phoebe Fox but it won't be my last. All. The. Stars.

With many thanks to NetGalley, Phoebe Fox and Berkley Publishing Group for the giving of the ARC.

Have you ever wanted to just drop everything and run away?

In The Way We Weren’t our main character is feeling completely frustrated and down on life and takes off for Florida, without telling anyone, for a well needed escape. Once in Florida she befriends an older gentlemen who helps her to make sense of things.

This was a quick read for me. I felt the main character was written in a really relatable way and this book brought me a ton of emotions. I loved the relationship between the older gentleman and the woman. This one will have you reflecting on life. Just coming back from Florida, I loved the setting, especially the turtles.

Thanks @berkleypub for my copy, this just released this week!
