This came recommended, so I wanted to like it at least a little, but I just never got into this book. (It took me a year and a half to plug away at it. I kept hoping it would grab me at some point.) The hockey-playing "Whiskey Robber" of this book was quite a character - and the story line IS like a novel, but maybe it was the writing style or the details shared, I just kept getting bored. Sorry to say, not for me.

Amazing. Truly brilliant. This follows the story of the "Hungarian Robin Hood" as he tries to make it in the transition between Communist and Capitalist Hungary. After trying to make a go of several different "careers," Atilla Ambrus becomes frustrated and robs a Post Office.

The stuff of legends ensues.

Rubinstein crafts Ambrus' story with respect and admiration, up to Atilla's fall to police.

Read it. Right now.

This book was ridiculous...ly good. I did not believe it was a true story until I got halfway through and saw the photos. It's just so crazy you can't imagine it happening in real life. To take a non-fiction story and write it so well that it comes off as a novel is a talent imho.

A little slow to start, but once you get past the introductory part it sucks you in.

With famous voices such as Eric Bogosian and Demetri Martin, the audiobook breaks the pattern of plain, narrative audiobooks. It features different voices for the characters, sound effects and even a bit of music between the chapters. It makes a great and fun atmosphere without taking away from the pace of the chapter or the intensity of the action.

The book sets up the scene nicely, providing quite a bit of a fascinating background on Romania and Hungary, to explain the setting from which the character rises. This is essential for the rest of the book, as much of the action plays out like a ridiculous movie with incompetent and clumsy people, highly vulnerable characters and funny situations all around.

A somewhat tragic and impressive story, that is completely true, all wrapped up in a nice and fun audiobook. I highly recommend this title!

An interesting story, but written in a style that is much more journalistic than I like.
