i really enjoyed the concept of this book, but i think the translation must not really do it justice. i can imagine the way in which the book was written makes much more sense in japanese, also that the novel is an adaptation of a play :) i did still like the story though and it was a nice read. didn't love the male gaze but it was kind of compensated by the intricate study of emotion and grief, especially at the end.

I will say the start of this book is slow, and I did have to tough it out a bit but I am so glad I did. This is an excellent story about owning your place in the world and the decisions you make. It very much reads like a play (which makes sense given the author's background) and I love it. If it's caught your eye it's certainly worth a try.

such a beautiful read. it was so simple yet so moving! i loved the style of storytelling that kawaguchi used; all of the chapters flowed seamlessly and everything felt so full. his wording was simple yet conveyed so much. he has a wonderful way with building characters and strengthening the reader’s relationship with them. i would really recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

I would love to give this 5 stars, the ending had me crying when I normally am not emotionally impacted by a book, but it took a lot out of me to start the book. That is the only reason for the deduction, but I will definitely be continuing on with the series
