no / little to no story progression. The main reason to read is if you like descriptions of day-to-day island life. Might suit people who like travel writing.

Someone somewhere described this as "Jane Austen meets The Durrells" and that's pretty accurate.
A fun, funny, romantic, multi-family saga set on an island. PERFECT holiday read, and part of a trilogy! Lucky us! Someone had better turn this into a TV show stat.
I am pretty sure the fictional island in this book was based on Tristan da Cunha, where my Aunt Wendy (a vet!) and Uncle Bryan lived for a few years, and I am back on my annual obsession of googling the next week-long voyage out of Cape Town. Bucketlist trip made even more urgent by how this book made me feel.
My only request: more tortoises in book 2, thx.

I love books with a strong sense of place, and this one did not disappoint. The author did a wonderful job of depicting life on a remote island, complete with island traditions, food, and a cast of quirky characters. This setting, a long with the growth in confidence of the main character, a bit of romance, and the revelation of some long-buried secrets made for a very enjoyable read.
