A bit of a novel of two halves, really – I loved the first half, but though the second half was interesting, I didn’t love it as much.
I cannot express how much I loved this book. It was full of all the best things in life--perseverance, love, entrepreneurship, hope, courage in the face of adversity, mentorship, grace, kindness. I wish I could give it 10 stars.

Superbly written, very readable, pleasantly surprised by the recommendation. I found the story charming, compelling and inspiring.
A Town Like Alice is a good WWII era story. The beginning reminds me of Unbroken and it makes me wonder if I would personally be tough enough and be able to live through what these prisoners of war and refugees had to deal with. The 2nd half of the novel was enjoyable but pretty slow. Joe and Jean are both memorable characters and the narrator of this audiobook version was great. 3 solid stars. Definitely worthwhile.
Jean Paget forms an unlikely friendship with her solicitor after the death of her wealthy uncle. Recounting to the man her life in Malaya during the second world war, Jean decides to travel back to land of her captivity, in the hopes of giving back to the people who showed her kindness during that dark time.
This story is so much more than a couple of sentences can explain.
A beautiful story, beautifully written, told though the eyes of the aging solicitor Noel Strachan, A Town Like Alice is so much more than a love story.
It's a story about resilience, and defiance, and perseverance.
But yes, it's very much a love story.

Shute is great get his books back in the shops engaging easy to read the stories will get you in
This book is basically Outlander with all of the fantastical elements removed. In part, that means it's historically culturally accurate (re: the treatment of aboriginal Australians).
Do you get annoyed when, in historical fiction, minorities are treated just like the white peoples? I do, and this book was more accurate. It was painful to read, but at least it didn't make the whites look like angels.
I liked:
- the relationships between Jean and the men in her life
- The portrayal of the narrator's personality and feelings
- The historical context
I disliked:
- It was a little boring throughout
3.75 stars
