Kinda challenging academic writing but very insightful

this was definitely a challenge for me, but i’m happy to say i finally read it! certainly more academic than i was anticipating (too many ‘epistemic’ and its derivatives and ‘pernicious’ to be thrown around). i appreciated reading it now, even though it was written post-election 2017. i am curious to read the author’s thoughts after this past election..

i enjoyed the case studies presented throughout the book to weave the author’s analysis and definition of misogyny. the humanist section, however, really lost me. the rating was based on how dense the topic and writing was, and how slow it was for me to read. i do wish the footnotes were a little less intense to read, it felt like an extra 40 pages or so to get through while reading a chapter.

the overall theme (which i agree with) is that misogyny needs a rebrand! we cannot be throwing it around at the smallest things when we mean sexism. I really appreciated how this was the core of the book. the logic of it all… whoosh. it’s really baffling how quickly every person can fall into misogynistic thinking without realizing it.

The Logic of Misogyny, via a philosophical lens and leaning on case studies as well as a few literary examples. Manne does a thorough job of walking us through defining misogyny (versus sexism specifically), what misogyny is, how it acts in society, where it stems from. This leads into how many recent events therefore hold no surprises as to why they panned out as they did (largely, women getting the short stick when victims and the perpetrator men getting excused from any angle possible and especially “he’s a good guy”). Not to mention why the 2016 elections held few surprises in how people reacted to the candidates (Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump), and the accusations both falsely leveled and leveled with evidence at each, respectfully. It is quite scholarly, with a robust bibliography at the end and a number of relevant footnotes. I will admit I didn’t seem to be quite in the scholarly-read mindset, so I did not give this a close reading, or at least not as close as possible.
Misogyny is systemic, and Manne illustrates how deeply systemic it is. The trick to eliminating will be rewriting the system, a Herculean but not impossible task. There is much work to be done, and the first step is, as always, (everyone) realizing that there is a problem. This book is a good place to start.

VERY academic/not that enjoyable to read

Interesting points, but the vocabulary was a bit above my knowledge level. This caused me to lose momentum/focus which may have impacted my interpretation.
