I’m not a fan of this book. It’s supposed to introduce kids to the Japanese language and culture but I feel it did such a horrible job of that. The pronunciation of certain Japanese words were wrong. The whole book Joji is undermining every single thing Koko says and even says that little girls might not be allowed to ride the elephant with no one questioning this train of thought. I know this is supposed to take place in Japan in the 1950s but come on! In a children’s book? The only redeeming quality was the art and the fact you can also read the story in Japanese. However, I feel there are other books out there that introduces Japanese language and culture way better than this one.

A bite-sized glimpse into the past in the form of a short, cute bilingual story with colorful colors and beautiful art.
