for the girls who obsess and can't get over that one cute guy who opened the door for them. personally, i'm not like that but you do you!

describing Peony's role in the clouds and rain of her betrothed to another woman was weird but taking us through the biological process of impregnation? that's just too unnecessary. the ghostly adventures were dragged too long and it became quite tedious to follow her journey. the book didn't have anything new to say, too, even though the author did extensive research to write this. i mean, it's good that the author thought to shed light on women's stories in ancient China but the way she wrote it was too weak to make an impact for me.

this is definitely one of Lisa See's lesser works.

Not an easy read, but I was compelled by the story to finish. The ending made it all a little better.

I would almost say to read the author's note at the end, FIRST.
It took me a minute to figure out what was going on. There is a great deal of social commentary here. There is also great wisdom which stretches across cultures. If you know nothing of Chinese culture, this will be a great awakening for you.
BEAUTIFUL and heartbreaking.
Women share experience regardless of race or place in history.

Peony is already an extremely foolish girl even before she begins starving herself. I continued reading out of interest in Chinese beliefs about the afterlife, but when Peony begins manipulating Ren’s wife, I found this development too distasteful to continue. I regret that I cannot recommend this book, although I am still eager to try other books by Lisa See.

2.5 ⭐️ I’ve been in a reading slump, and unfortunately this book didn’t pull me out of it. I really enjoyed other novels by Lisa See, but this one just didn’t do it for me. I found the story interesting while reading, but it was easy to put down.

I loved Lisa See's other books "Shanghai Girls" and "Dreams of Joy," but I couldn't finish this one. Just did not hold my interest.

It took me a bit to get into this, as the whole milieu is so strange and new to me. Lisa See always stretches my brain and this one was quite the stretcher! The details of life in the period of the end of the Ming dynasty and the Cataclysm of the Manchu takeover were one thing; the beliefs in the ghost world another. The efforts to support women especially as writers. Just wow.

Romance novel wrapped in social commentary and chinoiserie. In other words, a Lisa See special.
