Middle-Grade Fantasy and Science Fiction short stories
While this might be a great read for a middle school animal lover, it was only a mediocre read for me as a grown woman. Of particular note are the short stories "Socrates" by John Christopher and "Old Man Henderson" by Kris Neville. Both of these contain a dark streak reminiscent of, though not on par with, the work of Ray Bradbury.
