After the disappearance of his parents, Carter is taken in by his Uncle Sly...a "magician" who uses his magic to pickpocket. Carter refuses to steal like his uncle, so he runs away to Mineral Falls. He visits the carnival in town and meets B. Bosso, the carnival leader, and Mr. Vernon, a local magic shop owner. Each person sees Carter's magic skills. Carter realizes that B. Bosso is a bad person, but trusts Mr. Vernon. Through the magic shops, he meets a group of kids his age. They quickly become friends and take on B. Bosso and his carnival gang.

I really enjoyed this book. In certain ways it reminded me of A Series of Unfortunate Events. I also liked that after every couple of chapters it gave instructions on how to do a magic trick. The writing was great and I thought the characters were great as well, I can't wait to read the next book!

For early middle grade readers. I love the diverse set of characters and fun narration. Sprinkled throughout the book is a how to on simple magic tricks.

What I Did Like:
+Narrated by NPH himself!!! This won’t change my review, since it only applies to the audiobook, but it’s worth mentioning.
+Breaking that third wall to speak to the reader doesn’t always work, but in this case it absolutely does. The breaks feel natural and bring humor to the story.
+The characters are wonderful! They’re varied and realistic. I can see why this crew of misfits get multiple books.
+The magic lessons are great! They’re a good way to make this story stand out from other things in the genre.

Who Should Read This One:
-Middle grade readers who have ever felt like a misfit or appreciate magic!
-Adventure readers who enjoy found family stories.

My Rating: 3 Stars
Good opening book that introduces characters that will carry a full series!

I have been meaning to read this book for a while, but I never had the chance until now. Come join the misfits as they learn new tricks, battle an evil circus owner (with an interesting name), too many clowns to be comfortable with, we have a wonderful MC with plenty of trouble and a past that can still be explored and I hope he will be a bit happier now with how this book ended, there are revelations that made me go AH and OH, you can learn magic tricks (though I didn't think they were that interesting, but that is because it has been a long time since I was excited about learning tricks), and there is more. There are various characters and I loved most of them (Ridley was the exception), my favourite were the twins. The book is also illustrated and I LOVED IT. All in all, I can't wait for the next book.

This was a really fun story and I couldn't help but hear NPH in my head narrating it. It kinda reminded me of the tone of A Series of Unfortunate Events. My son really liked it too. Planning on reading the next book.
