This was just a very weird book. It wanted to be a lot of different things and did all of them poorly.
This is set in [unclear year] of New Orleans. Cars exist but the main char cter wears velvet dresses with corset lacings and everyone also talks like they live in the 2020s. Someone has a septum piercing. Everyone is totally cool with premarital sex and women appear to have the same rights as men
This is set in a spooky castle, which is kind of like reading a text description of five nights at Freddy's. Reading a jumpscare is very odd
The game aspect of this is by far the worst part, as it's described as basically a video game (in what appears to be the early 1900s?). Ophelia is immediately told how to win every challenge then does it. At no point does she display any intelligence, fortitude, strong will, or any characteristic that would justify winning a game. Kind of a Feyre in that regard
Ophelia, the main character, is incurious. She has no interest in finding anything out and just told various revelations and plot twists that a normal person easily could have figured out by looking around Or asking any question ever. She passively experiences her life which is so frustrating as a book main character. She has magic OCD and I can't tell if the depiction of that is offensive or not
Blackwell is also super boring. Pick any formulaic trope words and he fits all of them. A shadow daddy consent king touch her you die etc etc etc. Just felt like a checklist more than a character
Overall, this was pretty bad but it's a quick read despite being 500 pages. Recommended for fans of Ready Player One who want to branch into romantasy

I really really loved this book, 1st 5 star of the year. Love the characters and the trials, plot line. And the twist at the end, I didn't see it coming.
Definitely pick it up if you enjoy something a little dark and some gore thrown in, in a few places.
Will definitely be carrying on with the series and would definitely read again.
