Reading this was like walking through a global art fair, which made it easily enjoyable for me.

The chapters are divided by geography (West: The Americas, South: Africa & The Middle East, East: Asia, North: Europe). Hicks has included a wonderful selection of artists in each chapters. His delivery is always clear and accessible, with personal insights and musings carrying the narrative forward as we shift from artist to artist, region to region.

This is a great starting point in getting a good (or any) grasp on contemporary art. It's also a really neat book if you're unsure how to react to contemporary/modern art: through illustrating his "art compass" Hicks is essentially encouraging his readers to do the same -- to not be hesitant in reacting to artwork and, through their own searching, figure out what their North is.
