I love Pendergast. There, I said it. I wait anxiously for a new installment in the series every year. And I was not disappointed by this latest book.
There isn't really much I can say that won't be a spoiler. Suffice it to say that, if you're a fan, you'll be happy. And - of course - you'll be counting down the months until the next Agent Pendergast tome becomes available.
Enjoy!

Still the great writing and storytelling I've come to love from Preston and Child. This was such a non-story, though. Nothing happened. You get a great chase scene and then pretty much nothing until it's conveniently tied up in the epilogue. Pendergast is alive but his "rescue" is just about the silliest rescue ever. Constance has become a trivial character because all she does is moon after Pendergast.
This is like those filler episodes on TV seasons. The mythology of Pendergast's history and his use of the ancient mystical arts is getting old. I'm over Diogenes as a character simply because he doesn't die - a la Michael Myers. They need to go back to their earlier books like Relic, Reliquary, Cabinet of Curiosities and Still Life With Crows (my favorites hands down). Those were the creature features and they were so much more fun and engaging than the last few books they've put out in the last years. Give me more D'Agosta, Margot Greene, Corrie Swanson, etc.

This book seemed an awful lot like the hallway to the next big room (read: story) than a story of it's own. But that's OK... these book are always a fun romp!
This book was really all over the place. So many story lines to keep track of and it was somewhat hard knowing which one we were on. As of the last book, Aloysius had seemingly died, but we all know he's fine since the series is named after him. A lot of shit goes down, including a kidnapping of Constance by Diogenes. We even get a little POV from Proctor the butler. However, I do miss the investigations of straightforward crimes by Pendergast and D'Agosta.

Normally I love Pendergast books. However, this one was a bear to get through. I think the reason was Constance. She was hard to figure out in this one. Her motivations and behavior was just too erratic.
I had initially given this book four stars. I dropped it to three. It still has Pendergast. So, that always makes for a lot of fun.

This one started strong. The whole chase sequence with Proctor was fun. Also the Pendergast storyline was interesting enough. But the central plot was just pure melodrama. Another mediocre entry in this overall good series of books.
