Sci-fi tie-in with the miniatures game Maelstrom's Edge.
The Maelstrom is a band of energy expanding through the universe and wiping out everything in its path. As some people try to flee, those who can't afford to or who have their own reasons to stay start their own grabs for power.

On the world of Zycanthus, the capitalist Epirians are getting themselves off planet, or making as much as they can from the people hoping to buy transport to safety.
The Karists are a religious group who believe the Maelstrom is the way to ascension and enlightenment.

Karists land on Zycanthus to try and convert the masses. A lone Sheriff is the only one who knows about them and tries to get the government to do something.

The characters are well written and fit in with the 'fluff' of the game, although it can be read without knowing any of that.
There's some good action scenes and a bit of suspense as the sheriff tries to make people aware of the danger.

It finishes at a bit of a cliff hanger ending, to make you head for book 2 [b:Maelstrom's Edge: Sacrifice|25394109|Maelstrom's Edge Sacrifice (Battle for Zycanthus Book 2)|Tomas L. Martin|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1441893304s/25394109.jpg|45145731], but overall it was a good read.
