Not exactly a romance. And it's ten POV character studies of both the women and Mr. Nishino. Of course it's not linear. And there is no clear picture of Nishino, other than why all of the women slept with him and then dumped him. What happened to everyone afterwards? How did he die?

The second book I’ve read from this author and I really enjoyed it. Kawakami has a writing style I think I just vibe with. It’s clear and crisp, and her stories always feel a bit distant somehow. It’s like you never get to know the characters TOO well, but I guess I enjoy that in this context? As the title implies, this is the story of Nishino’s 10 loves throughout his life. Each of the 10 chapters is told from the perspective of a different “lover” of his and through their retellings you get a clearer and clearer picture of Nishino and his capacity/incapacity for love. Whether it’s an old college girlfriend or a superior at work or a housewife in a cooking class, they all fall for Nishino in someway. Honestly could’ve been a 5 star but there is one through-line that just made me uncomfortable. Other than that, a solid read for me. Excited to read more from Kawakami (already bought all her other publications).

the ten loves of mr. nishino is a book that reveals to us who mr. nishino is through the words of his ten loves. what we discover is that he's a horrible person in every way 😭 pretty much the only good thing people say about him is that he's handsome. he has assaulted his partners and thought it was romantic, he dates underage girls, he's extremely manipulative and misogynistic, he has a strange incest-esque relationship with his sister, and more.
due to his traumatic background, one could perhaps feel bad for him, but i just didn't. instead of going to therapy, he spends his time manipulating every woman he's in contact with.
i liked the writing style, which didn't surprise me since i love hiromi kawakami's work. the descriptions were very well-done and i think the translator did a great job as well. i also liked the structure.
i did think that the women didn't feel like actual characters, they sort of blended together as if they were all the same person. because of that, and the fact that nishino is a terrible person i don't enjoy learning about, i liked this way less than other books by hiromi kawakami. it was still good, though.
