The writing was great and Kawakami did a really fabulous job making Nishino and the women in turns unique and also totally pedestrian and knowable. The tone was melancholy and overall I enjoyed the book.
The pacing was slow and intentional and I had a hard time getting swept up in the story and would have liked to have known more about the relationship with his sister in the end.
Overall a good work but you need to be in the right head space to receive it.

The narrator for this audiobook was unpleasant to listen too. The quality of her voice acting was equivelant to Daphne from Scooby-doo reading the ingredients on a shampoo bottle. There was always a whiny or bratty element to her voice when a female character showed any sort of passion. In short, she ruined the book for me.
Getting the women's perspectives on their relationship with Nishino was interesting but the narrator was so distracting that none of them stayed with me. Of course, Nishino was an absolute knob. Somehow a "nice guy" and a bad boy at the same time. The way he talked about women was gross and his faux introspective moments bothersome.
I may have liked this book more if I'd read a physical copy, perhaps I will in the future. As it stands now, I did not enjoy this book.
